Directed by BAFTA Award-winner Andrew Dallmeyer this international co-production is ‘an absolutely captivating production of one of Strindberg’s best-loved plays’ (BroadwayBaby.com).
‘The play still poses important questions about contemporary relationships’ (ThreeWeeks).
'This intense, 1888 drama, an upstairs-downstairs with a passion about the taboo of sex between the upper and lower classes has lost none of its impact in the ostensibly classless 21st century in the hands of Vagabond Productions, ...it's an expose of hyprocrisy, a small tour de force that rips down any veneer of respectability in the upper classes' (EdinburghGuide.com).
''The story is told well; the energy of the Valet, Jean (played by
Bart VanLaere), carried the production. Displaying impressive
storytelling ability, VanLaere drew us into the 19th century world
where class and gossip dominate. To make an alien world seem familiar
is a rare talent and VanLaere was complimented in this regard by
Louise Seyffert’s performance as Miss Julie. Wonderfully flighty and
skittish in the first half, Seyffert’s transition to a broken woman
was poignant and touching' (Audience review)
'It's delicious seeing Jean's transformation from obedient servant to domineering bully and, as a metaphor for the abused underclass, he's perfect. 'You spat at me,' he shouts. 'Don't be surprised if I wipe it off on you.' Strindberg probably didn't have texting hoodies looting flatscreen TVs in mind when he penned his masterpiece, but the issues he explores are still sadly relevant today. (BroadwayBaby.com)
‘The cast handles these tricky interactions and emotions with incredible skill and authenticity. Bart Vanlaere is outstandingly sinister as Jean, captivating in his transformation from syncophantic lover to jaded bully. Louise Seyffert's Miss Julie is frivolous and flippant, with no understanding that actions have consequences. The audience's sympathies were torn between the two as we followed their battle to rise above each other, our heads snapping back and forth as if we were at Wimbledon' (BroadwayBaby.com).
‘The issues Strindberg explores are still sadly relevant today.
All round, a fabulous production and one of the best pieces of theatre
I’ve seen at this year’s Fringe’

‘Many actors at the Fringe are good, a handful are exceptional. The cast of ‘Miss Julie’ (Bart Vanlaere and Louise Seyffert) are undoubtedly exceptional, with two having won Best of the Fest awards in the past’ (ThreeWeeks).
